Villa Herod Atticus

One of the most important monuments of The Roman Times is situated in the ancient village of Kynouria, Eva, whose remains are rescued. The place of the Villa is extended to 20.000km2, a little far from the village Kato Doliana and opposite the Monastery of Loukou and it is one of the richest findings that where discovered initially by the traveller Leake and later by the archaeologists Theodoros and George Spyropoulos.

The latest archaeological find was the pillar with the names of the victims of the Marathon Battle. This finding proves the relationship of origin between Herod and Marathon and it was about his later creation. Herod of Attica was a philosopher, politician and lover of works of art and extended his father' s villa to Eva with aquaducts, baths, statues. The villa compromises the greatest monument of the Athenians hero-worship as it is located in a great landscape with fertile ground, several quarries and was a museum of ancient art. The villa, sample of a special architecture and construction has an atrium, artificial ditch-river, three paths, mosaic floors and pillars. The State is planning to build a shelter to protect the findings.

Foundation Zafiri

It is run by 7 members in charge of the president George Papageorgiou. It is a member of the international net "Arcadia" of the International Arcadian Company.

The institution was established on 20-11-1980 and its main purpose was the educational, spiritual and cultural development of the residents of Astros. In the building of the Cultural Centre take place a lot of cultural and artistic events, associations and clubs are housed, courses take place and there is a film club and a library. The institution has also published several books.

Parnon Refuge

It is 1420m from the sea level, near the village Vamvakou Lakonias. It started in 1973 and it was a donation from George Pierce. The refuge is 2 hours from Vamvakou, through Kastanitsa and the route close to nature is amazing electricity is not available, it has a fireplace, a stove and gas for cooking, as there is natural souce of water. There is possibility of hospitality for 34 people.

The area is ideal for amateur astronomers, that avery year make observations there. You can also explore the mountain through guided routes, whereas the view is breathtaking. From the refuge starts a route through a path to the highest top of Parnonas, the Big Tourla.

Moustos Wetland

It is one of the two wetlands of Eastern Peloponnisos - the other is the one of Fokianos. It is 4km far from Astros and it is a shelter of migratory birds.

The flora of the region is also extremely important. The lake is supplied with water of springs and lead to the gulp of Astros through two canals. With the ecological park of Parnonas it has been placed to Natura 2000 and it is a preserved region.

The environmental importance of the lake is huge as it is said that there was the old port of Astros. The water of the lake is brackish and have healing properties because of the sulfides that contains it. This water is suitable for those who have rheumatic and other diseases.Apart from the Lake of Moustos there is a smaller lake of Herronisiou, that extends in 20m and its water gushes from the hill. The lake leads directly to the sea.

Museum Astros

Located 10 km from Xiropigado taking the road towards the Astros will meet the Archaeological Museum, located in the city center and is housed in a listed building Karitsiotis School.

Inside the museum, there are many important exhibits, coming mainly from the villa of Herod Atticus (2nd AD. Century), which is located 8 km west of Astros and is almost next to the monastery of Loukous founded in 1117 AD.

There are also exhibits in the Museum courtyard (ornate couches, capitals, etc.), and many other, very large, which unfortunately are stacked in the basement of the museum due to lack of exhibition space.
